5G at Large Scale Events: A Crowd Pleaser

In recent years the rise of 5G technology has revolutionised the telecommunications landscape in the UK. One example of this is how it has reshaped the way we experience large scale music and sporting events.

What is the Fifth-Generation Mobile Network?

First deployed in 2019, 5G is distinguished by its capabilities. It has a far higher download speed and bandwidth than its predecessor, meaning that the network has significantly greater capacity and is much faster.

How is it deployed at Large Scale Events?

Across the UK, coverage has been rolled out to numerous events using mobile masts, known as COWs (Cells on Wheels). These portable infrastructures have been instrumental in boosting connectivity at a number of notable events, for example:

  • Glastonbury Festival – In June 2023, Vodafone installed nine temporary masts and EE a further seven, boosting the network at the festival to its highest ever capacity.  Similar temporary masts were also installed at Latitude Festival, Boomtown, and Reading & Leeds Festival during the summer of 2023

  • Royal Ascot – Welcoming approximately 300,000 visitors over five days, Royal Ascot was supported by additional 5G coverage in 2023. Vodafone and EE installed temporary masts to meet the connectivity demands associated with the influx of attendees visiting the racecourse

  • Wembley Stadium – Due to its large capacity of 90,000 for both sports fixtures and music events, EE upgraded their network and installed permanent masts to amplify coverage at Wembley Stadium in 2022

  • Coronation of King Charles III – Vodafone became the first UK operator to dedicate a slice of its public standalone 5G Network to the TV company ITN to broadcast the Coronation

The Impact at Large Events:

Deploying 5G is transforming the events industry in a number of ways.

  • Enhanced User Experience – The high capacity allows for a faster and more secure phone connection, enabling event attendees to easily connect with one another. This is particularly useful during multi-day festivals when staying connected is crucial

  • Broadcasting Advancements - The technology facilitates the rapid and reliable uploading of content for live streaming, without the risk of network congestion affecting broadcast performance. This is particularly useful for live content contribution, ensuring seamless and uninterrupted viewing experiences

  • Remote Production – The reliability and high  bandwidth of 5G facilitates remote production. This reduces the number of staff required on-site as camera feeds can be sent directly to the studio for production

  • Improved Camera Mobility – 5G-enabled cameras allow operators to roam freely around event venues to capture footage, as they are not constrained by wires

  • Events Applications – The technology can be used to facilitate digital tickets, reducing reliance on printed tickets, and streamlining access to events. It can also be used across point-of-sale card machines to speed up transaction times

Whilst the deployment of 5G improves user experience and journalism, it should be noted that there are security concerns. These networks are susceptible to cyber threats and therefore require strict security measures to safeguard the network. Robust security protocols are crucial to maintaining network integrity and minimising vulnerability.

Looking Ahead:

5G technology is transforming the events industry in the UK, increasing connectivity and improving production. For network providers it has enabled strategic partnerships with event organisers and venues, which in turn has proved to be a valuable marketing tool for both parties. Widespread coverage has increased customer satisfaction by improving user experience, with attendees now enjoying faster and more reliable connectivity.
